IBM Completes Its Acquisition of HRL Laboratories

On August 26, 2026, IBM announced it completed the acquisition of HRL Laboratories. The deal, first disclosed in July 2026, gives IBM a silicon-spin qubit team alongside its existing superconducting transmon program, plus HRL's work in quantum sensing, cryogenics, and advanced materials.

IBM published the closing on its own newsroom, so treat the strategic claims below as IBM's claims. The completion itself is a corporate milestone, not a new hardware result.

What changes with the deal closed

HRL's fabrication processes will feed into Anderon, the quantum wafer foundry IBM established earlier in 2026. That gives IBM a path to manufacture both superconducting and silicon-spin processors in foundries it controls, rather than relying on external fabs for one modality. The company describes this as a dual-track hardware strategy.

HRL's co-owners, Boeing and General Motors, will stay on as strategic industrial partners. IBM says the three companies will collaborate on aerospace, automotive, logistics, and materials-modeling applications. Those partnerships are statements of intent until specific programs ship.

How it fits IBM's roadmap

IBM's public roadmap still targets Quantum Starling in 2029 and Blue Jay in the mid-2030s. Starling is the fault-tolerant system IBM wants to build from modular cryogenic cells linked by cryogenic interconnects, the same cells IBM connected for the first time earlier in August. Adding silicon-spin expertise gives IBM a second qubit architecture to draw on if superconducting scaling hits a wall, but it does not by itself prove either modality will hit its scheduled targets.

Financial terms of the HRL acquisition were not disclosed.

What to watch next

The key follow-up is whether IBM adds a silicon-spin processor to its public roadmap with a named system and date, the way Starling and Blue Jay already have, or keeps HRL's work as a longer-term research bet. The second signal is whether Anderon's foundry output expands beyond superconducting wafers to include spin-qubit fabrication at volume.
